Our Process

Measuring Light levels at the site

We used a tool called a light meter to make precise measurements every 100 feet or so, of the lighting around the 167th Street train station and Mullaly Park. As demonstrated, the light levels were consistently <1 footcandle. Minimum requirements for walkways in NYC is 8-10 FC.

We usually met about once or twice a week at WHEDCo Teen Program in the evenings to discuss our plans or visit Mullaly Park. We would pick the days which fit best for the group as a whole so we can enjoy working on  this project together.

Monthly Meetings at Zerolux

We met at zeroLUX, a lighting design firm located in Chelsea, Manhattan, about twice a month. Sometimes, we would meet up at the train station near Teen Program and head out together.

At zeroLUX, we used a computer program called Dialux to design the installation mockup and explore how different lighting fixtures and filters would affect light levels and ambiance in the park. We came together to discuss which lights we felt would fit best for our project and the needs of our community. Finally, collaborating designer Lana Lenar provided us with different lights and professional equipment. We want to give a special thanks to everyone at zeroLUX for creating a space for us to explore lighting technology and put our goals into practice!

Civic Engagement

We attended two Community Board 4 Meetings at the Bronx Museum. In January 2019, Rayanne spoke in front of the Board and community members to raise awareness about the issue of low light levels at the 167th Street train station and Mullaly Park. In April, we delivered flyers to present our event, Blue Mullaly, and invite community members to attend.

We collaborated with the Parks Department to acquire a permit for Blue Mullaly. We were able to start a conversation about next steps for improving the lighting fixtures in Mullaly Park. More info to come!
